The Active Participle and the Syntax of the Present Tense
1997Abstract One of the main purposes of this book is to explore the syntactic representation of sentences in the present tense. The verbal form used to express present tense, the Benoni, is a curious one: It serves the functions of both a present participle (active and passive, respectively (2-la,c)) and a tensed verb, as in (2-l b,d).
