, 1999 문장의 의미는 크게 단언과 비단언의 의미로 나뉜다. 비단언의 의미는 단언의 의미에 비해서 쉽게 이해되지는 않는다. 일반적으로 비단언의 의미는 ‘함축된 의미’ 혹은 ‘전제’로 이해된다. 전제는 의미론에 있어서의 중요한 주제들 즉 의미론과 화용론의 상대적 위치, 부정의 문제, 자연 언어와 논리 언어의 관계, 동적 의미론의 필요성 등과 관계가 있어, 이에 대한 다양한 연구가 이루어져 왔다. 전제는 두 가지 관점에 의해 정의된다.
