The epidemiology of preterm labor
Seminars in Perinatology, 2001There are many factors that are associated with preterm labor and delivery. These include maternal conditions such as medical illness, anemia and uterine malformation. They may be related to past events such as prior obstetric complication, previous preterm labor, cervical surgery or induced abortion.

Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology, 2000
There are many conditions, such as non-white race, young maternal age, and uterine malformations, that have been associated with preterm birth that are not amenable to intervention. Maternal cervical and intrauterine infection and inflammation may have a primary causative role in a fraction of the cases of preterm birth and preterm rupture of membranes

The management of preterm labor*1
Obstetrics & Gynecology, 2002Preterm birth is the leading cause of neonatal mortality and a substantial portion of all birth-related short- and long-term morbidity. Spontaneous preterm labor is responsible for more than half of preterm births. Its management is the topic of this review. Although there are many maternal characteristics associated with preterm birth, the etiology in

The ultimate goal of treating preterm labor is to prolong the pregnancy long enough to decrease the incidence of neonatal mortality and morbidity associated with prematurity, while minimizing maternal and fetal risks. There are many controversies in treating preterm labor.

Endocrinology of Preterm Labor
Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology, 2000The clinical importance of preterm labor and delivery dictates that we understand the physiology and diagnostic usefulness of endocrine as well as other agents that may be helpful in this regard. Clearly, estrogen and progesterone establish the environment that allows parturition and probably preterm labor to occur.

Magnesium Sulfate for Preterm Labor and Preterm Birth
Obstetric Anesthesia Digest, 2009Approximately half of the more than 500,000 preterm births each year result from preterm labor. Tocolytic therapy continues to be the focus of treatment of these women. Although a variety of tocolytics are used in clinical practice, magnesium sulfate remains one of the most commonly used agents.

The Diagnosis and Management of Preterm Labor
Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Research, 2001Accurate diagnosis of preterm labor remains a problematic issue. New techniques such as transvaginal cervical sonography and fetal fibronectin are increasingly important in diagnosis and intervention planning. Neither test can, at present, be recommended for screening of the general population since there is no effective intervention for a positive ...

Obstetricians play a relevant role in minimizing neonatal morbidity and mortality for women in preterm labor. Tocolytic agents can delay preterm birth for at least 2 days, thus allowing the administration of antenatal corticosteroid and in-utero transfer to appropriate neonatal health care settings, interventions that reduce neonatal mortality and ...

A national survey on preterm labor
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1989A national survey was conducted to examine the American obstetricians' approach to management of preterm labor. Multiple-choice questionnaires were mailed to all current members of the Society of Perinatal Obstetricians and 750 randomly selected diplomates of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Preterm Labor in the Quadriplegic Parturient
American Journal of Perinatology, 1986The occurrence of preterm labor is not uncommon in the pregnant quadriplegic. Early diagnosis is hampered by the inability of most quadriplegics to sense uterine contractions in the usual way. A patient we recently treated for preterm labor learned to recognize contractions by the associated symptoms of autonomic hyper-reflexia: flushing, headache, and
