Ainda que a ascosferiose tenha sido descrita nos primeiros anos do século XX, não adqüiriu relevância até as décadas de setenta e oitenta, quando foi detectada com grande freqüência em amplas regiões do mundo. No Brasil, esta enfermidade foi encontrada pela primeira vez, em 1997, no Estado de São Paulo.
