Influence of prey depletion and human disturbance on tiger occupancy in Nepal

Journal of Zoology, 2012
AbstractTigers are globally endangered and continue to decline due to poaching, prey depletion and habitat loss. In Nepal, tiger populations are fragmented and found mainly in four protected areas (PAs). To establish the use of standard methods, to assess the importance of prey availability and human disturbance on tiger presence and to assess tiger ...

Conservation by native peoples

Human Nature, 1994
Native peoples have often been portrayed as natural conservationists, living a "balanced" existence with nature. It is argued that this perspective is a result of an imprecise operational definition of conservation. Conservation is defined here in contrast to the predictions of foraging theory, which assumes that foragers will behave to maximize their ...

Availability and consumption of food by common eiders wintering in the Gulf of St. Lawrence: evidence of prey depletion

Canadian Journal of Zoology, 1996
To quantify the influence of common eiders (Somateria mollissima) on their food supply in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, eastern Canada, we measured prey availability and patch utilization during two consecutive winters. In this region, eiders fed predominantly near submerged reefs where large populations of blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) and green sea ...

Prey depletion by a predator guild suggests spatial differences in competitive ability, but not prey partitioning, consistent with functional trade‐offs

Journal of Animal Ecology
Abstract Understanding the mechanisms by which competing species coexist is fundamental for explaining the distribution and abundance of organisms. Many coexistence mechanisms require trade‐offs in the ability to deplete shared resources, but resource depletion by ...

Long-Term Demography of Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta) in a Lion-Depleted but Prey-Rich Ecosystem [PDF]

open access: possible
Interspecific competition has strongly shaped the evolution of large carnivore guilds. In Africa, the lion (Panthera leo) and spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta, hereafter hyena) exert direct and indirect competitive impacts on each other and on subordinate guild members. The impacts of competition on demography are complex and not well understood.
