Primary amenorrhea and pituitary adenomas

From 1972 to 1980, 210 patients underwent transsphenoidal operation for removal of a prolactin-secreting tumor. Eight of the patients had primary amenorrhea. All eight patients had had a normal thelarche and pubarche without menarche, and all eight had hyperprolactinemia and abnormal findings on sella turcica tomography.

Osteopenia in Primary and Secondary Amenorrhea

This study aimed at investigating the prevalence of osteopenia among a hypoestrogenic group of patients with primary or secondary amenorrhea. Twenty-seven patients with amenorrhea were examined. Sixteen of them presented with secondary amenorrhea (mean age 27.8 +/- 1.9 yrs), and 11 with primary amenorrhea (mean age 21.3 +/- 1.6 yrs).

A 30-year-old woman had galactorrhea and secondary amenorrhea, along with symptoms, signs, and laboratory findings of primary hypothyroidism. Serum prolactin and thyrotropin (TSH) levels were elevated. After initiation of thyroid hormone replacement, serum TSH and prolactin levels fell progressively into the normal range.
