Safety of primary anastomosis in emergency colo-rectal surgery

open access: yesColorectal Disease, 2003
AbstractBackground  The surgical management of left‐sided large bowel emergency patients remains controversial. There has been an increasing trend towards primary reconstructive surgery. The main dilemma remains appropriate patient selection for primary anastomosis. Methods  The records of 323 patients who presented as acute emergencies and underwent ...

Primary versus secondary anastomosis in intestinal atresia

Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 2019
Neonates with intestinal atresia (IA) undergo either primary anastomosis (PA) or ostomy creation with secondary anastomosis (SA). Our purpose was to compare outcomes for PA and SA and to assess factors influencing procedure selection. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of neonates with IA between 2009 and 2015.

Primary Anastomosis in Carcinoma of the Colon

New England Journal of Medicine, 1945
THE changes in the surgical management of malignant lesions of the colon effected in the last few years have resulted in a marked reduction in the mortality following radical operations on the large bowel. It was our intention to study recent colon cases with particular emphasis on the part that chemotherapy had played in improving the results.

Resection with primary anastomosis for necrotizing enterocolitis

Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 1983
Primary anastomosis following the resection of bowel for necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) can be done with acceptable morbidity and mortality rates. Twenty-seven patients are reported with three deaths. Primary anastomosis will avoid problems seen with small-bowel stomas. The concomitant ligation of a significant patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) should be

Tracheal resection with primary anastomosis in children

Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 1973
Abstract We observed nine tracheal stenoses following intensive respiratory care in 524 neonates and infants. For all but four of them, we used medical and endoscopic treatment only, with satisfactory immediate and late results. In four children between 6 and 16 yr, we were obliged to perform a tracheal resection with primary anastomosis.

Indications for operation included massive colonic bleeding (11), obstructing carcinoma (5), toxic megacolon (1), and enterocolitis (1). Five patients died postoperatively (27.8 per cent). Causes of death included sepsis, upper gastrointestinal bleeding,
