Wind farm contribution to primary frequency control
2015 17th European Conference on Power Electronics and Applications (EPE'15 ECCE-Europe), 2015This paper presents the network frequency controlled by wind farm without supporting from other conventional power plants. The wind farm which consists of several wind turbines with doubly fed induction generators are divided into two groups and coordinated by a wind farm control center.

Stability guarantees for primary frequency control with randomized flexible loads
2016 American Control Conference (ACC), 2016There has recently been interest in diversifying the technologies that provide primary frequency control of the power grid beyond generation. One method of interest to obtain frequency control by turning on or off flexible loads in response to local measurements of line frequency.

Hierarchical Control of Residential HVAC Units for Primary Frequency Regulation
IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, 2018This paper presents a hierarchical control framework for implementing primary frequency regulation (PFR) by using residential heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) loads. The proposed control system consists of a load aggregator, a central controller, and a group of local controllers.

On implementation of primary frequency control in MMC-HVDC transmission systems
2017 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe), 2017This paper investigates methodologies for the utilization of modular multilevel HVDC transmission (MMC-HVDC) for primary frequency control. In contrast to conventionally used average voltage source converter (VSC) models for frequency support system studies, advanced MMC models provide a different dynamic behaviour due to their decoupled ac and dc ...

Impact on Interarea Modes of Fast HVDC Primary Frequency Control
IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, 2016Primary frequency control is often added to the control system of a high-voltage DC (HVDC) transmission that interconnects two nonsynchronous ac grids. As the active-power actuation lag is typically in the range of hundreds of milliseconds, the HVDC primary frequency control can be made fast enough to permit inertia sharing among the interconnected ac ...

Variable Speed Wind Generators Participation in Primary Frequency Control
Wind Engineering, 2008To maintain a power reserve to contribute to the primary frequency control with variable speed wind generators, two control strategies are analysed in this paper: a torque control strategy and a fuzzy logic based multivariable control strategy. The first and most simple strategy allows to maintain a regular reserve only when the wind turbine generator

Decentralized primary frequency regulation control strategy for vehicle-to-grid
2016 3rd International Conference on Systems and Informatics (ICSAI), 2016Drawbacks of control strategy will appear if autonomous distributed electric vehicles are integrated into the power grid. In order to decrease those unstable influences of power system frequency, a novel decentralized primary frequency regulation control strategy is presented in this paper, which includes the maintaining balance strategy of the battery

An aggregate model of plug-in electric vehicles for primary frequency control
2016 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting (PESGM), 2015The penetration level of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) has the potential to be notably increased in the near future, and as a consequence, power systems face new challenges and opportunities. In particular, PEVs are able to provide different types of power system ancillary services. The capability of storing energy and the instantaneous active power

Primary frequency control monitoring at grid control centers
2016Although participation of large power generation units in control area’s primary frequency control is obligatory by national grid codes, the actual practice shows that it is often disabled in power plants. Since this control causes small fluctuations of unit’s power production which influences planned hourly production and causes additional wear and ...

On decentralized control of small loads and energy rebound within primary frequency control
2016 Power Systems Computation Conference (PSCC), 2016Decentralized decision making is a promising candidate for cost-effective participation of small electric loads to power system operations. In such setup, individual loads take control decisions based on local information. Local control laws are designed to synchronize individual efforts. Large loads groups may thereby contribute to system stability in
