Primary Frequency Regulation by Demand Side Response

Arabian Journal for Science and Engineering, 2021
Recently, there have been growing attempts to replace conventional power generators with renewable energy sources. However, the inertia reduction that results from such measures jeopardizes the stability of the power system. Typically, power system operators utilize the spinning generating units to provide the required capacity to preserve system ...

Smart Induction Motor Variable Frequency Drives for Primary Frequency Regulation

IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion, 2020
This article proposes an induction motor variable frequency drive to investigate its potential in handling smart grid's frequency. This can thus mitigate the grid reliance on expensive power plants. To this end, a primary frequency controller is presented enabling the drive to reduce its power in proportion to grid frequency drop.

Application of electric vehicles for primary frequency regulation service

2021 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference - Latin America (ISGT Latin America), 2021
In the electricity system, the frequency behavior is an indicator of the quality of the service provider that expresses the equilibrium between the supply and demand of electricity. Demand presents challenging to predict behavior, which means that usually, the balance is corrected through changes in a generation. The operators rely on generation plants

Unit Commitment With Primary Frequency Regulation Constraints

IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, 2005
Summary form only given. The unit commitment problem with tertiary reserve requirements has been broadly studied. Such reserves, when needed, are centrally deployed with relatively slow time constants of the order of minutes. In contrast, the scheduling of units offering primary frequency regulation reserve deployable in a decentralized manner within ...

Primary Frequency Regulation Technology of Power Grid and Frequency Regulation Potential Analysis of Hydrogen Fuel Cell

2021 IEEE 16th Conference on Industrial Electronics and Applications (ICIEA), 2021
Frequency stability is an important guarantee to maintain the safe operation of power system, and the high proportion of new energy integration puts forward higher requirements for the frequency regulation(FR) of power grid. In this paper, based on the technical requirements and conventional methods of primary frequency regulation(PFR), the dynamic ...

Primary and secondary frequency regulation with photovoltaic generators

2015 16th International Scientific Conference on Electric Power Engineering (EPE), 2015
With the increasing number of distributed generators which transform renewable power sources to electricity, PV generators trough invertors, when is usually difficult to make power output regulation from the primary source side, is the problem of the output power adapting according to the consumption requirements increasingly important.

Research on primary frequency regulation strategy with frequency division of wind turbines

2017 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo, Asia-Pacific (ITEC Asia-Pacific), 2017
Rotor speed changes with variation of electrical power witch controlled by converter in doubly-fed induction generator(DFIG), compared to the large thermal power unit DFIG is more suitable for adjusting the power fluctuation of fast varying component. In this paper, a primary regulating strategy of DFIG by distinguishing power fluctuating frequency is ...

Impacts of Virtual Primary Frequency Regulation on Electromechanical Oscillations

IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, 2018
Virtual primary frequency regulation (VPFR) is a coordinated demand and generation response, which is proposed to counteract post-disturbance frequency fluctuations and deviations. But meanwhile, it also influences oscillation stability. VPFR’s continuity, slope and response time are three characteristics that have large influences on oscillation ...
