Meaning Scepticism and Primitive Normativity
Pacific Philosophical Quarterly, 2021AbstractIn this paper, I examine Hannah Ginsborg's attempt to address the challenge raised by Saul Kripke's meaning sceptic. I start by identifying the two constraints that the sceptic claims must be met by a satisfactory answer. Then I try to show that Ginsborg's proposal faces a dilemma.

The Primitive Norm and Its Evolution [and Comments]
Current Anthropology, 1977Different views exist as to the character of the social norms operating in primitive society. Marxist science defines them as moral norms, customary law, or customs. Non-Marxist science regards them for the most part as law. Theoretical analysis demonstrates, however, that these definitions are either inaccurate or insufficient. In fact, the obligatory

Distribution of norms of primitive hyperbolic classes
Journal of Mathematical Sciences, 1999Let \(h(d)\) denote the class number (in the narrow sense) of indefinite binary quadratic forms of discriminant \(d>0\) (\(d\equiv 0\) or \(1\bmod 4\), \(d\) not a square). The growth of \(h(d)\) for \(d\to \infty\) is well known to be quite erratic due to the irregular growth behaviour of the fundamental unit \(\varepsilon(d)\) of the corresponding ...

Theory & Psychology, 2022
The main normative moral theories in Western thought, from deontology to virtue and consequentialist ethics, revolve around conceptions of the moral right, good, and worth. However, a few elementary psychological motives lie at a deeper level. In the present article, I outline the key tenets of regulatory focus, regulatory mode, and the hedonic ...

Nepheline-normative primitive melt genesis in arcs: Mineralogic and lithospheric controls
2018Nepheline-normative Ca-rich melts crystallize neither hypersthene nor quartz due to higher Na2O, K2O, and CaO contents than tholeiitic basalt and are rare in volcanic arcs compared to water-rich silica-normative magmas. Unlike basalts, nepheline-normative melts cannot derive from partial melting of the upper mantle, but require melting of pyroxenite ...
