Convergent? Minds? Some questions about mental evolution [PDF]
In investigating convergent minds, we need to be sure that the things we are looking at are both minds and convergent. In determining whether a shared character state represents a convergence between two organisms, we must know the wider distribution and

Automata accepting primitive words
Let X be a finite alphabet, \(| X| \geq 2\). A word w over X is said to be primitive if \(w=u\) n implies \(u=w\) and \(n=1\). In this paper, properties of sets of primitive words accepted by finite automata are studied. If a given n-state automaton accepts a primitive word at all it accepts a primitive word whose length does not exceed 3(n-1).

On the maximal number of cubic subwords in a string [PDF]
We investigate the problem of the maximum number of cubic subwords (of the form $www$) in a given word. We also consider square subwords (of the form $ww$). The problem of the maximum number of squares in a word is not well understood.

Pushes in words-a primitive sorting algorithm
We define the statistic of a push for words on an alphabet $[k]$ and use this to obtain a generating function measuring the degree to which an arbitrary word deviates from sorted order. Several subsidiary concepts are investigated: the number of cells that are not pushed, the number of already sorted columns, the number of cells that coincide before ...
