Sand Behavior under Stress States Involving Principal Stress Rotation

Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering - ASCE, 2018
AbstractThe behavior of sands exhibiting both unstable and stable response, in their loose deposited state, under axial-torsional shearing involving continuous principal stress rotation is investig...

Principal Stress Rotation: A Missing Parameter

Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division, 1980
Changes in the directions of principal stresses occur in all ground work associated with engineering works, as well as earthquakes; an important topical example is the cyclic loading from waves on the foundation soil of offshore structures. A review of the shortcomings of existing laboratory shear apparatus is followed by a description of a new plane ...

Drained principal stress rotation in saturated sand

International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences & Geomechanics Abstracts, 1988
An investigation into the effects of drained principal stress rotation on the behaviour of a saturated medium-loose sand is described. Using a hollow cylinder apparatus the principal stress directions were rotated both at a constant shear stress and under an increasing shear stress during drained monotonic loading to failure.

Principal stress rotation and cyclic shear strength for an elliptical rotation stress path

Marine Georesources & Geotechnology, 2017
Based on the analytical solutions for wave-induced soil response in an unsaturated anisotropic seabed of finite thickness, an elliptical, i.e., noncircular rotation stress path is proven to be a more common state in a soil element with the cyclic shear stresses due to the traveling linear wave.

Rotation of principal axes and changes of stress due to mine-induced stresses

Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 2015
This research project comprises stress monitoring, primarily of the changes induced by longwall mining or destress blasting, which was realized in a mine of the Ostrava-Karviná Coalfields (Upper Silesian Coal Basin). Verification of the stress field response to stresses induced by different geological or mining factors was the main aim of the research

Undrained anisotropy and principal stress rotation in saturated sand

Géotechnique, 1984
This Paper describes an investigation carried out in a new hollow cylinder apparatus into anisotropy and the effects of principal stress rotation in a medium-loose sand, tested under undrained conditions. Principal stresses have been rotated at a constant shear stress during both monotonie and cyclic loading.

Experimental Investigation on Principal Stress Rotation in Kaolin Clay

Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, 2005
A combined axial–torsional testing system was developed to investigate the effect of rotation of principal stresses on the three-dimensional mechanical behavior of Kaolin clay. Uniform and reproducible cohesive specimens having a specimen shape of a hollow cylinder were obtained using a two-stage slurry consolidation technique.
