The Principles of Interpretability

open access: yesNotre Dame Journal of Formal Logic, 1999
A generalized Veltman semantics developed by de Jongh is used to investigate correspondences between several extensions of interpretability logic, IL. In this paper we present some new results on independences.

Somatic mutational landscape in von Hippel–Lindau familial hemangioblastoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The causes of central nervous system (CNS) hemangioblastoma in Von Hippel–Lindau (vHL) disease are unclear. We used Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) on familial hemangioblastoma to investigate events that underlie tumor development. Our findings suggest that VHL loss creates a permissive environment for tumor formation, while additional alterations ...

Complexity, Climate Change and the Precautionary Principle [PDF]

open access: yes
The precautionary principle has been proposed as a basis making decisions about environmental health under conditions of uncertainty, but remains controversial.

Differential expression of cancer‐related genes supports prediction of poor response to first‐line treatments in T‐ALL pediatric patients with high minimal residual disease

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In the present work, we have identified a transcriptional signature based on the differential expression of six genes (BCL2&MAST4, HSH2D&LAT2, METRN&PITPNM2) that would facilitate the early detection of T‐cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T‐ALL) patients prone to a poor treatment response and could be implemented at diagnosis, along with other risk ...

The revelation principle and regularity conditions

open access: yes, 2005
The revelation principle asserts that every outcome brought by a mechanism is realized by a truthful direct mechanism. The present paper investigates the regularity conditions of these two mechanisms in the continuous space of the agent’s type.

The principle of goodness and reality situating a fundamental ethical principle [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
This paper describes an ethical theory provisionally called the Principle of Goodness. Before doing so, however, it is necessary to discuss the nature of human beliefs in general, in order to correctly situate the theory.

The Maximum Entropy Production Principle: Its Theoretical Foundations and Applications to the Earth System [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The Maximum Entropy Production (MEP) principle has been remarkably successful in producing accurate predictions for non-equilibrium states. We argue that this is because the MEP principle is an effective inference procedure that produces the best ...

Cell‐cycle‐specific lesion evolution rather than inhibition of double‐strand‐break repair underpins cisplatin radiosensitization

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We analyze cisplatin–DNA adducts (CDAs) and double‐strand breaks (DSBs) in a cell‐cycle‐dependent manner. We find that CDAs form similarly across all cell cycle phases. DSBs arise only in S‐phase. CDAs might not directly impair DSB repair, but S‐phase DSB lesions evolve in the presence of CDAs and disrupt repair in G2, also causing radiosensitization ...
