Understanding and the Principle of Compositionality
Philosophical Perspectives, 1990That semantics for natural languages must be compositional is one of the most widely accepted principles in the philosophy of language. Recently, however, the principle has been questioned by at least three writers: Stephen Schiffer in Remnants of Meaning, Eva Kittay in Metaphor: Its Cognitive Force and Linguistic Structure and L. J.

This paper argues that there are three reasons why we should regard Wittgenstein's Tractatus as a forerunner of formal semantics: Wittgenstein is convinced that we can apply formal notions to natural languages, that the meaning of a sentence is to be ...

The term semantic primitives refers to a set of basic, atomic concepts from which all other (compound) concepts are constructed. It presupposes the principle of compositionality—the idea that complex items or expressions can be formed by combining ...

Second International Conference on Internet and Web Applications and Services (ICIW'07), 2007
Web services are a relatively new paradigm for building distributed Web applications. Normally for proving properties of service compositions, and mapping the pre/post-conditions are assertions only on the initial and final states of the service respectively.

Abstract We investigate the polarization and dielectric properties of ferroelectric BaTiO3 thin film grown compositionally graded substrate by using first-principles method. Due to the spatial variation of the misfit strain between film and substrate, the polarization in the film decreases gradually along x direction of the film.

Compositional tuning of nanoscale complex metal oxides (CMOs) can lead to enhanced performance and favorable properties for a variety of energy-related applications. However, investigations of the nanoscale CMOs used in energy storage technologies demonstrate that these nanomaterials may have an adverse biological impact, highlighting a fundamental ...

Sentences as Systems: The Principle of Compositionality and Its Limits
2018In this chapter, it is argued on two different grounds that sentences in natural languages can be seen as systems. First, beyond their linear order, sentences exhibit a syntactic hierarchical structure. Therefore, they are structured entities. Although this structure is usually interpreted as independent of meaning, many semanticists believe that ...

Recognition of Fine-Grained Emotions from Text: An Approach Based on the Compositionality Principle
2010This chapter addresses the tasks of recognition, interpretation and visualization of affect communicated through text messaging in virtual communication environments. In order to facilitate sensitive and expressive communication in such environments, we introduced a novel syntactic rule-based approach to affect recognition from text.
