On nonparametric estimation of a functional of a probability density

IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 1986
Let \(\{h_ k\}\) be the Hermite orthonormal system over the real line, and let \(X_ 1,...,X_ n\) be i.i.d. with density f. Parseval's identity suggests the following estimate \(\hat I\) of \(I=\int f^ 2(x)dx:\) \[ \hat I=\sum^{N(n)}_{k=0}[\frac{1}{n(n-1)}\sum_{i\neq j}h_ k(X_ i)h_ k(X_ j)].

On probability density functions for complex variables

IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 2006
Complex random variables arise naturally in many settings and their properties are of general interest. Past work on complex variables has mainly focused on their second-order structure, as well as that of their conjugates, whereas the main purpose of this correspondence is to clarify the concept of a density function for a complex random variable, and

On the interpretation of the maternity function as a probability density

Theoretical Population Biology, 1971
Abstract It is noted that the net and gross maternity functions (after division by the appropriate reproduction rates) are often treated as if they were probability densities, and their moments are handled accordingly. This notion is investigated in a probabilistic framework.

PROBABILITY DENSITY FUNCTION LEARNING BY UNSUPERVISED NEURONS

International Journal of Neural Systems, 2001
In a recent work, we introduced the concept of pseudo-polynomial adaptive activation function neuron (FAN) and presented an unsupervised information-theoretic learning theory for such structure. The learning model is based on entropy optimization and provides a way of learning probability distributions from incomplete data.
