Probability Mass Functions

2019
Abstract This chapter focuses on probability mass functions. One of the primary uses of Bayesian inference is to estimate parameters. To do so, it is necessary to first build a good understanding of probability distributions. This chapter introduces the idea of a random variable and presents general concepts associated with probability ...

An Information Theoretic Approach to Probability Mass Function Truncation

2019 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory (ISIT), 2019
Given a discrete random variable X that takes values in a finite set χ according to a probability mass function (pmf) P, a truncated pmf Q of P is a conditional pmf that results from restricting the domain of X to some subset of χ. Truncated pmf arise in several problems of statistics and probability.

Limiting forms of Probability Mass Functions via Recurrence Formulas

The American Statistician, 1993
Abstract Through the use of recurrence formulas the Polya-Eggenberger probability mass function is shown to have at least seven different limiting forms: hypergeometric, beta binomial, binomial, negative binomial, Poisson, logarithmic, and geometric. Other uses of recurrence formulas are also suggested.

Probability mass function distance approach for fast speaker diarization

2017 25th Signal Processing and Communications Applications Conference (SIU), 2017
In this paper, a new method for speaker diarization is presented. Using spectral features, vector quantization is applied over all audio data. Frames are labelled with the id of the closest codeword. Based on the histogram of frame ids, a probability mass function is estimated for each speech segment.

Conditional Probability Mass Functions

2012
In Chapter 4 we discussed the concept of conditional probability. We recall that a conditional probability P[A|B] is the probability of an event A, given that we know that some other event B has occurred. Except for the case when the two events are independent of each other, the knowledge that B has occurred will change the probability P[A].

The mode of a probability mass function

International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2006
A simple, direct condition is formulated for determining the mode(s) of a probability mass function. This condition is then applied to the Poisson and hypergeometric mass functions.

Maximum likelihood estimation of a unimodal probability mass function

Statistica Sinica, 2016
We develop an estimation procedure of a discrete probability mass function (pmf) with unknown support. We derive the maximum likelihood estimator of this pmf under the mild and natural shape-constraint of unimodality. Shape-constrained estimation is a powerful and robust technique, which additionally provides smoothing of the empirical distribution ...

Spectral Enhancement of Whispered Speech Based on Probability Mass Function

2010 Sixth Advanced International Conference on Telecommunications, 2010
Whispered speech can be effectively used for quiet and private communications over mobile phones and is also the communication means for ENT patients under a regime of voice rest. The reconstruction of natural sounding speech from such whispers can be useful for several types of application across different scientific fields ranging from communications
