Finite Element Analysis of Cell Killing Probability in Electroporation with Single Bipolar Electrode

open access: yesFrontiers in Biomedical Technologies, 2021
Purpose: In the electroporation we can use different electrode types such as needle and plate electrode with different arrangements. One of the new electrode types is single bipolar electrode that the anode and cathode components are in the same needle for decreasing the invasiveness of electroporation procedure.

A Solution to Dynamic Weapon Assignment Problem Based on Game Theory for Naval Platforms

open access: yesGames
Weapon target assignment is a critical challenge in military contexts. Traditionally, commanding officers manually decide weapon assignments, but the problem’s complexity has grown over time. To address this, automated systems have been introduced. These

A Critical Commentary on Block 2011: "David Friedman and Libertarianism: a Critique" and a Comparison with Lester [2000] 2012's Responses to Friedman [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
David Friedman posed a number of libertarian philosophical problems (Friedman 1989). This essay criticizes Walter Block’s Rothbardian responses (Block 2011) and compares them with J C Lester’s critical-rationalist, libertarian-theory responses (Lester ...

Biological Control of the Chagas Disease Vector Triatoma infestans with the Entomopathogenic Fungus Beauveria bassiana Combined with an Aggregation Cue: Field, Laboratory and Mathematical Modeling Assessment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Background: Current Chagas disease vector control strategies, based on chemical insecticide spraying, are growingly threatened by the emergence of pyrethroid-resistant Triatoma infestans populations in the Gran Chaco region of South America. Methodology

Biologically Active Implants Prevent Mortality in a Mouse Sepsis Model

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A modular, triple‐action titanium implant is developed to prevent implant‐associated infections by repelling bacteria, killing pathogens, and enhancing tissue integration. Coatings with phage cocktails targeting P. aeruginosa and S. aureus show significant bacterial reduction and improved survival in a mouse sepsis model.

Determination of rainfall thresholds for shallow landslides by a probabilistic and empirical method [PDF]

open access: yesNatural Hazards and Earth System Sciences, 2015
Rainfall-induced landslides not only cause property loss, but also kill and injure large numbers of people every year in mountainous areas in China. These losses and casualties may be avoided to some extent with rainfall threshold values used in an early

Effects of X-ray irradiation on human spermatogenesis [PDF]

open access: yes, 1972
Direct cell kill and inhibition of mitosis have been suggested as mechanisms to explain the occurrence of absolute sterility following the irradiation of the testes.

Transition between immune and disease states in a cellular automaton model of clonal immune response

open access: yes, 1997
In this paper we extend the Celada-Seiden (CS) model of the humoral immune response to include infectious virus and cytotoxic T lymphocytes (cellular response).

Practical Guide to the Design of Granular Hydrogels for Customizing Complex Cellular Microenvironments

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Granular hydrogels are emerging microporous platforms for cell culture and delivery, showing great potential for replicating the complex, heterogeneous environments found in natural tissues. This review outlines the design principles of granular hydrogels, highlighting critical factors that determine the final physicochemical properties of the entire ...

Mapping single‐cell responses to population‐level dynamics during antibiotic treatment

open access: yesMolecular Systems Biology, 2023
Treatment of sensitive bacteria with beta‐lactam antibiotics often leads to two salient population‐level features: a transient increase in total population biomass before a subsequent decline, and a linear correlation between growth and killing rates ...
