The theory of probability arose from the desire of men to understand the behavior of systems that cannot entirely be controlled. More exactly, it arose from the desire of a French gambler, the Chevalier de Mere, to understand why his dice had suddenly turned against him. The Chevalier’s concern was a very practical one: he was losing money.
