Procainamide-Induced Agranulocytosis
Southern Medical Journal, 1984We have described six new patients accounting for seven episodes of agranulocytosis due to procainamide. Six episodes involved the slow-release oral preparation. With continued use of this convenient antiarrhythmic agent, it is important that physicians be alert to the possibility of agranulocytosis in febrile patients receiving procainamide.

The risk of developing a syndrome resembling lupus erythematosus when taking procainamide has been well recognized for over 15 years, although the development of myopathy has been reported on one occasion only, in this instance without histopathological evidence of muscle inflammation.

Procainamide-Induced Psychosis
JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1979To the Editor.— The article "Procainamide-Induced Psychosis" by McCrum and Guidry (240:1265, 1978) is an interesting anecdote, but in what useful sense is "psychosis" the proper designation of the patient's mental state? Clearly the patient was confused and had a shortened attention span.

Complexation of Procainamide with Dextrose
Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 1982The percent of procainamide complexed with dextrose was determined to be directly related to the concentration per mole fraction of dextrose in the solution. The complexation process was reversible and did not proceed at lower pH (approximately 1.5).

Procainamide and survival in ventricular fibrillation out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
Academic Emergency Medicine, 2010OBJECTIVES Procainamide is an antiarrhythmic drug of unproven efficacy in cardiac arrest. The association between procainamide and survival from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest was investigated to better determine the drug's potential role in ...

Identification of desethyl procainamide in patients: a new metabolite of procainamide.
The Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, 1981Desethyl procainamide (PADE) was identified in the urine of a patient treated with procainamide (PA) by high-performance liquid chromatography followed by solid-probe mass spectrometry. PADE prevented ventricular fibrillation in chloroform-asphyxiated mice but PA was 1.5 times more potent than PADE with respect to dose and 1.7 times more potent with ...
