Peritoneal Dialysis International: Journal of the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis, 1983
Five months after starting continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), a communicating hydrocele developed with massive edema of the scrotum and of the penis. Peritoneal injection of radioactive technetium (Tc99m) demonstrated a tract suggesting an open processus vaginalis.

The patent processus vaginalis and the inguinal hernia
Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 1969Abstract In 1955 Rothenberg and Barnett 1 reported 50 infants and children with unilateral inguinal hernias who had contralateral groin explorations. They concluded that 100 per cent of infants under one year of age and 65.8 per cent of children over one year had "bilateral inguinal hernias." Since that time there have been many reports confirming ...

The development and closure of the processus vaginalis
Hernia, 1999It is now well known that the failure of the processus vaginalis (PV) to close off following descent of the testis not only accounts for nearly all inguinal hernias of childhood [Rothenberg et al, 1953], but also for other common congenital conditions of childhood such as scrotal hydroceles and encysted hydroceles of the cord.

Factors Affecting the Development of the Processus Vaginalis in the Rat
Journal of Urology, 1996We examined the factors that influence development of the processus vaginalis in the rat.Neonatal Sprague-Dawley rats 0 to 3 days old underwent distal or proximal gubernaculotomy, unilateral orchiectomy or proximal genitofemoral nerve transection.

Laparoscopic evaluation for a contralateral patent processus vaginalis
Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 1994Between May 1, 1992 and March 1, 1993, 221 consecutively treated children under 10 years of age evaluated by the authors for a known inguinal hernia were involved in a prospective protocol to determine whether diagnostic laparoscopy has a place for evaluation of the contralateral inguinal region.

Laparoscopic evaluation of contralateral patent processus vaginalis in children
The American Journal of Surgery, 1996Routine contralateral inguinal exploration following unilateral herniorrhaphy in children remains controversial. Contralateral patent processus vaginalis (PPV) incidence decreases from 80% in young infants to about 20% to 30% in the adult population. However, the incidence of a clinical hernia appearing subsequently following unilateral herniorrhaphy ...

Torsion of Scrotal Testis in a Persistent Processus Vaginalis
Journal of Urology, 1976A case of an unusual association between hernia and testicular infarction, namely torsion of a normally descended testis within a persistent processus vaginalis, is presented. The advantages of the inguinal ingulinal approach for the exploration of suspected torsion are discussed.

Incomplete Disappearance of the Processus Vaginalis as a Cause of Ascending Testis
The Journal of Urology, 1997Recently evidence has been accumulating that some undescended testes present later in childhood after apparent normalcy in infancy. These ascending testes appear to explain why a significant number of orchiopexies are performed later in childhood despite the recommendation that surgery for cryptorchidism be performed in infancy.

The Processus Vaginalis and Gubernaculum: Their Raison d’Etre Redefined
Surgical Clinics of North America, 1971While authorities are agreed that the presence of a patent processus vaginalis is directly responsible for inguinal hernia, there is much controversy about how this occurs. With the aid of embryology and comparative anatomy, a possible explanation of the role of the processus vaginalis and gubernaculum in the development of the inguinal canal and ...

The Use of 99m Technetium in the Diagnosis of Patent Processus Vaginalis
Journal of Urology, 1988We report 2 cases of scrotal swelling after placement of peritoneal catheters. 99mTechnetium intraperitoneal scanning was used to identify a patent processus vaginalis in each case. This simple, rapid, and nontoxic method can be used routinely to screen patients for a subclinical hernia before institution of intraperitoneal therapy.
