A fractal pattern of hierarchical genetic population structure in mixed stocks across fish segregated by dams revealed by genomic resources for curimba Prochilodus lineatus. [PDF]
Abstract Genomic resources, new microsatellite markers and a novel observation of a fractal pattern in the genetic population structure are presented for curimba, Prochilodus lineatus, a freshwater migratory model species of South America. Our main goals were to investigate the presence of mixed fish stocks and the effects of damming‐induced ...

Deciphering the complex life cycle and partial migration of an ecological engineer and critical Neotropical fishery species, Prochilodus costatus. [PDF]
Abstract Understanding complex migration patterns, including drivers of partial migration and habitat use, is challenging but essential for conservation, as it determines a species' adaptative capacity in the face of environmental change and anthropogenic threats.

Findings From the Pearl River Basin: Dissolved Oxygen Dominates Functional Trait Filtering and Diversity Patterns in Urban Rivers. [PDF]
Urbanization reshapes fish communities via environmental filtering. Surveying 44 sites across an urban (Huadi) and a relatively natural (Zengjiang) river in the Pearl River Basin (2024), we linked environmental variables to fish functional traits using RLQ and SEM, finding that dissolved oxygen is the dominant filter in urban reaches—selecting low ...

Genomic Insights Into Carnivorous Fish in the Characiformes. [PDF]
This study employed comparative genomic approaches using 12 high‐quality Characiformes genomes (covering nine subfamilies) with zebrafish as an outgroup to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying the carnivorous adaptation of Characiformes. Expanded gene families, positively selected genes, and rapidly evolving genes in carnivorous species were ...

Hybridization, Maternal Inheritance, and Evolutionary Time of Divergence of Endangered Species of Hypancistrus (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) in the Xingu River. [PDF]
We uncover recent hybridization dynamics among three endemic Hypancistrus species from the Xingu River, including the critically endangered H. zebra. Mitogenomic analyses reveal unidirectional maternal inheritance and recent evolutionary radiation (< 0.5 Ma), explaining their retained reproductive compatibility.

Scale morphology of Prochilodus lineatus with emphasis on the scale epithelium [PDF]
The fish body is entirely covered by a thin, smooth and glandular epidermis, closely attached to the scales inserted on the dermis. The descriptive work on this tissue dates to twenty or thirty years ago, bears very little photographic record and does not focus on the scale epithelium, despite the fact that it is in direct contact with the environment.
