Histology, histochemistry and stereology of the adipose fin of Prochilodus lineatus

Microscopy Research and Technique, 2011
AbstractThe adipose fin is small, nonpared, and usually located medially between the dorsal and caudal fin. Its taxonomic occurrence is very restrict; thus, it represents an important trace for taxon distinction. As it does not play a known vital physiological roll and it is easily removed, it is commonly used in marking and recapture studies.

Lead accumulation and its effects on the branchial physiology of Prochilodus lineatus

Fish Physiology and Biochemistry, 2013
The purpose of this work was to determine the tissue accumulation of lead (Pb) and its effects on osmoregulatory processes of the freshwater fish Prochilodus lineatus. Juvenile fish were exposed to Pb (from 1.7 to 0.7 mg of dissolved Pb L(-1)) for 6, 24 and 96 h and Pb accumulation was analyzed in the gills, liver, kidneys, blood cells and muscle.

B-chromosome frequency stability in Prochilodus lineatus (Characiformes, Prochilodontidae)

Genetica, 2009
The genus Prochilodus includes individuals ranging in size from medium to large, being highly relevant for commercial and subsistence fishing. Prochilodus species have a diploid number of 2n = 54 chromosomes and up to seven supernumerary (B) microchromosomes.

Storage and transportation of Prochilodus lineatus (Characiformes) sperm prior to cryopreservation

General and Comparative Endocrinology, 2017
In this study we compared post-thaw quality of P. lineatus sperm frozen shortly after collection, with sperm frozen after dilution and transportation, and up to 6h from collection. From each sperm sample (n=10 males) five aliquots were taken. One aliquot was diluted in the freezing medium (1 sperm:8 glucose:1 methyl glycol) and frozen ∼20min after ...

Genotoxic Effects of Aluminum on the Neotropical Fish Prochilodus lineatus

Water, Air, & Soil Pollution, 2010
Applying an integrated approach using the Comet, micronucleus (MN), and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) assays, occurrence of erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities (ENAs) and the liver activity of antioxidants enzymes (catalase and glutathione-S-transferase (GST)) was carried out to evaluate the effects of acute (6, 24, and 96 h) and subchronic ...

Digestion and assimilation of benthic biofilm by the Sábalo, Prochilodus lineatus

Journal of Fish Biology, 2021
AbstractThe Sábalo, Prochilodus lineatus (Valenciennes, 1837), is one of 270 fish species in the Rio Paraná system, and it comprises >50% of the fish biomass. Its diet is flocculant benthic biofilm comprised of algae, bacteria and non‐living organic matter: a food resource apparently of little value to other fishes. Digestion and assimilation of key

Gasoline effects on biotransformation and antioxidant defenses of the freshwater fish Prochilodus lineatus

Ecotoxicology, 2011
Biochemical biomarkers in the Neotropical freshwater fish Prochilodus lineatus were evaluated following acute exposures to the water-soluble fraction of gasoline (WSFG). Fish were exposed to the WSFG diluted to 5% in water (WSFG group) or only to water (Control group) for 6, 24 and 96 h and the gills and liver were removed for the biochemical analyses.

Hematological and biochemical alterations in the fish Prochilodus lineatus caused by the herbicide clomazone

Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology, 2013
The indiscriminate use of herbicides has led to the contamination of water bodies, possibly affecting the health of aquatic biota. Therefore, to evaluate the possible effects of the clomazone-based herbicide (Gamit(®) 500) on the fish Prochilodus lineatus, juveniles were exposed for 96h to three concentrations (1, 5 and 10mgL(-1)) of clomazone, and an ...

Effect of Amide on Semen Cryopreservation of Curimba (Prochilodus lineatus).

Cryo letters, 2021
The low molecular weight and high cellular permeability of amides make them suitable for use as penetrative cryoprotectants for sperm cells. This study aims to evaluate the effect of dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethylacetamide (DMA) on sperm cryopreservation of Curimba (Prochilodus lineatus).Semen samples were diluted in media containing ...

Toxicity and effects of a glyphosate-based herbicide on the Neotropical fish Prochilodus lineatus

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part C: Toxicology & Pharmacology, 2008
The toxicity of Roundup, a glyphosate-based herbicide widely used in agriculture, was determined for the Neotropical fish Prochilodus lineatus. The 96 h-LC(50) of Roundup was 13.69 mg L(-1), indicating that this fish is more sensitive to Roundup than rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar).
