Bank provisioning behaviour and procyclicality [PDF]

open access: possibleJournal of International Financial Markets, Institutions and Money, 2005
Abstract The current debate on the possible procyclicality of the new Basel Accord pays little attention to the procyclicality created by unsound loan loss provisioning. This article investigates how bank provisioning behaviour is related to the business cycle, using 8000 bank-year observations from 29 OECD countries over the past decade ...

Are Credit Ratings Procyclical?

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2003
Abstract This paper studies the influence of the state of the business cycle on credit ratings. In particular, we assess whether rating agencies are excessively procyclical in their assignment of ratings. Our analysis is based on a model of ratings determination that takes into account factors that measure the business and financial risks of firms ...

Persistence and Procyclicality in Margin Requirements

However, if margin levels are proportional to volatility, then a spike in volatility leads to potentially destabilizing margin calls in times of market ...

Procyclicality, Collateral Values and Financial Stability [PDF]

open access: possibleSSRN Electronic Journal, 2006
This paper analyses how the risk-sharing capacity of the financial system varies over the business cycle, leading to procyclical fragility. We show how financial imperfections contribute to underinsurance by entrepreneurs, generating an externality that leads to the build-up of systematic risk during upturns.

Procyclical Credit Rating Policy*

Asia-Pacific Journal of Financial Studies, 2015
AbstractThis paper examines whether credit rating agencies applied consistent rating standards to US corporate bonds in the periods surrounding the 2008 financial crisis. Based on estimates of issuing firms' credit quality from a structural model, I find that rating standards are in fact procyclical: ratings are stricter during an economic downturn ...
