Thyroid Neoplasia in Captive Raccoons (Procyon lotor)
Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, 2010Two adult, spayed, female raccoons were diagnosed with thyroid neoplasia. One raccoon had a palpable, left-sided, nonfunctional thyroid adenocarcinoma which was treated with a thyroidectomy twice with local recurrence both times. After the second recurrence, pulmonary metastases were identified.

Herpesvirus-like Infection in a Raccoon (Procyon lotor)
Journal of Wildlife Diseases, 1995During March 1990, a subadult raccoon found dead in northeastern Pennsylvania (USA) had gross lesions of multifocal hepatitis. Microscopically, multifocal randomly distributed areas of acute necrosis with intranuclear viral inclusions were seen in liver, spleen, adrenal glands, and tongue.

Electrocardiographic evaluation of the healthy raccoon (Procyon lotor)
American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1986SUMMARY Leads I, aVF, V3, and V10 ecg were obtained from 12 healthy raccoons anesthetized with xylazine and ketamine. Intervals and amplitudes of component deflections were remarkably uniform among the individuals. Vector orientation of QRS mimicked that for the dog; but the relatively low voltages to QRS mimicked those of cats.

Polycystic kidney disease in a raccoon (Procyon lotor)
Journal of Wildlife Diseases, 1996During March 1988, a case of bilateral polycystic kidney disease (PKD) occurred in an aged raccoon (Procyon lotor) at a zoo in Wilmington, Delaware (USA). Prior to its death, the raccoon had no clinical signs. On necropsy there was bilateral enlargement of kidneys which, on cut sections, had many variable sized fluid-filled cystic cavities. Endometrial

First Report of a Demodex sp. in Raccoons (Procyon lotor)
Journal of Wildlife Diseases, 1993Demodex spp. mites were seen in skin sections of 5 of 53 raccoons (Procyon lotor) necropsied on Parramore Island, Virginia (USA). In all infections, mites were present in the skin over the lower legs; in one raccoon they also were located in a follicle of a vibrissa. None of the raccoons had Demodex-related gross lesions.

Genic Variability in the Raccoon Procyon lotor
American Midland Naturalist, 1987Starch-gel electrophoresis was used to study genic variation in the raccoon, Procyon lotor. Two hundred and forty-two specimens were analyzed from 14 localities in the United States. Polymorphism was observed at 10 of 23 loci, and mean heterozygosity varied from 0.07O to 4.37O. Results of F-statistic analyses indicated significant differentiation among

Architecture of the masticatory apparatus in eastern raccoons (Procyon lotor lotor)
American Journal of Anatomy, 1986AbstractThe structure and function of the masticatory apparatus of raccoons resemble those found in carnivores. In this study, the architecture of the skull, dentition, and masticatory apparatus is described, and a model is proposed that suggests a mechanism used by raccoons to reduce different foods.

Vocal Communication in Raccoons (Procyon Lotor)
Behaviour, 1984AbstractThe study describes structure, ontogeny and contexts of raccoon (Procyon lotor) vocalizations and investigates whether structure and motivation interplay in the way predicted by general motivation-structural rules (MORTON, 1977, 1982). Observations during a full reproductive cycle in a mixed group of captive raccoons indicate that they use an ...
