A workflow to generate physical 3D models of cerebral aneurysms applying open source freeware for CAD modeling and 3D printing

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Neurosurgery, 2019
Objectives: 3D anatomical models are becoming a new frontier in surgery for planning and simulation on an individualized patient specific basis. Since 1999, 3D cerebral aneurysms models for neurosurgery have been proposed.

Productivity of the hired and family labour and determinants of technical inefficiency in Ghana's fish farms

open access: yesAgricultural Economics (AGRICECON), 2010
This paper examines the productivity of hired and family labour and determinants of technical inefficiency of fish farms in Ghana. A modified Cobb-Douglas stochastic frontier production function which accounts for zero usage of family and hired labour is

Green Biased Technical Change in Terms of Industrial Water Resources in China’s Yangtze River Economic Belt [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
As a significant ecological corridor from west to east across China, the Yangtze River Economical Belt (YREB) is in great need of green development and transformation. Rather than only focusing on the overall growth of green productivity, it is important

Escherichia coli deletion mutants illuminate trade-offs between growth rate and flux through a foreign anabolic pathway. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Metabolic engineers strive to improve the production yields of microbial fermentations, sometimes by mutating the genomes of production strains. Some mutations are detrimental to the health of the organism, so a quantitative and mechanistic understanding

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Ratio-based data envelopment analysis: An interactive approach to identify benchmark

open access: yesResults in Control and Optimization, 2022
In the real world we are confronted with many cases where the ratio of input/output data is so important for managers, so in this regard we cannot use traditional Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) models to evaluate the efficiency of decision-making units (

On the inconsistency of the Malmquist-Luenberger index [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Apart from the well-known weaknesses of the standard Malmquist productivity index related to infeasibility and not accounting for slacks, already addressed in the literature, we identify a new and significant drawback of the Malmquist-Luenberger index

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Effects of the Implementation Intensity of Ecological Engineering on Ecosystem Service Tradeoffs in Qinghai Province, China

open access: yesLand
Ecological engineering (EE) has a profound impact on land-use dynamics, leading to alterations in ecosystem services (ESs). However, an appropriate EE implementation intensity that can balance the tradeoffs associated with altered ESs well has always ...
