The Theory of Cost and Production in the Multi-Product Firm

Econometrica, 1961
THE MULTI-PRODUCT firm occupies a prominent place among important but neglected topics in economic theory. Barring the programming approaches, a search of the literature reveals no comprehensive theoretical treatment of the subject. Indeed the brief development by Hicks in the mathematical appendix to Value and Capital [6] is probably the most thorough

ADJUSTMENT TO PRODUCTION UNCERTAINTY AND THE THEORY OF THE FIRM

Economic Inquiry, 1986
This paper considers the behavior of the firm which faces uncertainty in its production process but can adjust its output once the uncertainty is resolved. Ex post adjustment, unlike previous treatments, involves a marginal cost penalty if more output is required and a lowering of price if too much is produced.

Economic resilience of the firm: A production theory approach

International Journal of Production Economics, 2019

Firms can respond to these events using a variety of “resilience” actions, or tactics. Here we provide a microeconomic foundation for analyzing a comprehensive range of these tactics, incorporating both inherent and adaptive ...

Spillovers, integrated production and the theory of the firm

Journal of Evolutionary Economics, 1996
Recent econometric literature has demonstrated the existence of significant technological spillovers within and around groups of advanced (R&D-intensive) firms. I demonstrate thatcompetence blocks of advanced firms operate as technical universities and research institutes, unintentionally providing free educational and research services, often in areas

ADJUSTMENT TO PRODUCTION UNCERTAINTY AND THE THEORY OF THE FIRM: REPLY

Economic Inquiry, 1990
This reply responds to two comments on our 1986 article in this journal under the same title. The comments discuss a special case of the model which gives a certainty result, and also propose several alternative formulations of the model. The reply argues that the special certainty result is not an interesting or reasonable case, and discusses the ...
