A Note on the Calculation of Adjusted Profile Likelihood

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Statistical Society Series B: Statistical Methodology, 1993
SUMMARY An adjustment to the profile likelihood examined by Cox and Reid required orthogonalization of the nuisance parameters with respect to the parameter of interest. An approximation to the adjusted profile likelihood not requiring explicit orthogonalization is derived and exemplified.

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

The association between short video addiction and emotion dysregulation among college students: a latent profile analysis and its influencing factors

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology
ObjectiveThis study aimed to use latent profile analysis (LPA) to identify heterogeneous configurational patterns of short video addiction and emotion dysregulation among college students, and to systematically examine the predictive effects of cognitive

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

A Nonparametric Bayesian Approach to the Rare Type Match Problem

open access: yesEntropy, 2020
The “rare type match problem” is the situation in which, in a criminal case, the suspect’s DNA profile, matching the DNA profile of the crime stain, is not in the database of reference.

A Profile Likelihood Approach for Longitudinal Data Analysis

open access: yesBiometrics, 2017
SummaryInappropriate choice of working correlation structure in generalized estimating equations (GEE) could lead to inefficient parameter estimation while impractical normality assumption in likelihood approach would limit its applicability in longitudinal data analysis. In this article, we propose a profile likelihood method for estimating parameters

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Microbiome‐blood–brain barrier interactions in aging — mechanisms and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Aging reshapes the gut microbiome (↓SCFA‐producing commensals; ↑pro‐inflammatory outputs), shifting circulating metabolites (↓SCFAs; ↑LPS, ↑TMAO, ↑PAA) that act at the BBB to increase nonspecific transcytosis, alter transport, and promote astrocyte reactivity, heightening brain vulnerability.
