Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Circulating miR‐144‐3p as a Novel Independent Biomarker Associated With Low Muscle Strength Among Older Adults

open access: yesJournal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle
Background Low muscle strength, a key component of sarcopenia, is significant in the development of adverse health outcomes among older adults. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been implicated in mechanisms of sarcopenia; however, their specific functions in ...

By dawn or dusk—how circadian timing rewrites bacterial infection outcomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The circadian clock shapes immune function, yet its influence on infection outcomes is only beginning to be understood. This review highlights how circadian timing alters host responses to the bacterial pathogens Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, and Streptococcus pneumoniae revealing that the effectiveness of immune defense depends not only

Elucidating novel immune profiles for predicting infection in high‐risk cohorts: a pilot study in patients with relapsed and refractory chronic lymphocytic leukaemia

open access: yesClinical & Translational Immunology
Objectives Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) patients are at increased risk for infection, with the risk even higher for relapsed and refractory patients.

The m6A Dynamics of Profilin in Neurogenesis

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2019
Our understanding of the biological role of N6-methyladenosine (m6A), a ubiquitous non-editing RNA modification, has increased greatly since 2011. More recently, work from several labs revealed that m6A methylation regulates several aspects of mRNA ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.
