The impact of supraglacial debris on proglacial runoff and water chemistry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Debris is known to influence the ablation, topography and hydrological systems of glaciers. This paper determines for the first time how these influences impact on bulk water routing and the proglacial runoff signal, using analyses of supraglacial and ...

Two-stage opening of the Dover Strait and the origin of island Britain

open access: yesNature Communications, 2017
Britain’s separation from mainland Europe is believed to be the result of spillover from a proglacial lake in the North Sea, but this has remained unproven.

Refining the timing of Middle Pleistocene (MIS 12 to MIS 6) ice advances into northern central Europe: sedimentological analysis and single‐grain luminescence dating of glaciotectonic complexes and tunnel‐valley fills

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
We summarize the current state of knowledge on the age of the Middle Pleistocene ice advances into northern central Europe and provide 25 new single‐grain feldspar luminescence ages of Elsterian and Saalian glacigenic sediments to constrain the age of the ice advances and their tentative correlation with marine isotope stages/substages.

Flow‐pattern evolution of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet indicated by the subglacial lineation record over Norway, Sweden and Finland

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
We present a 25‐stage reconstruction of the ice‐flow pattern evolution of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet based on mapping and analysis of ~240 000 subglacial lineations and lineation fields across Norway, Sweden, Finland, and parts of NW Russia. Our reconstruction uses a glacial geomorphological inversion approach, in which we generated 611 individual ...

Growth and reworking of freshwater microbially‐mediated carbonates in wind‐stressed lake margins (Lago Sarmiento, Southern Patagonia)

open access: yesSedimentology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Understanding the biotic and abiotic influences on the deposition and diagenesis of recent microbial carbonates is crucial for addressing the environmental and ecological significance of ancient organosedimentary structures. This study investigates these factors and their expression in the microstructure of Holocene tufa thrombolites from a ...

Recent glacier and glacial lake changes and their interactions in the Bugyai Kangri, southeast Tibet

open access: yesAnnals of Glaciology, 2016
Glaciers in the Bugyai Kangri are located in a transition zone from southeast Tibet, where monsoonal temperate glaciers dominate, to inner Tibet, where continental glaciers dominate.

Glacier‐Atmosphere Interactions and Feedbacks in High‐Mountain Regions ‐ A Review

open access: yesReviews of Geophysics, Volume 64, Issue 1, March 2026.
Abstract Mountain glaciers are among the natural systems most vulnerable to climate change. However, their interactions with the atmosphere are complex and not fully understood. These interactions can trigger rapid adjustments and climate feedbacks that either amplify or attenuate atmospheric signals, influencing both glacier response and large‐scale ...

Seasonal hydrological and suspended sediment transport dynamics in proglacial streams, James Ross Island, Antarctica [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Rapid warming of the Antarctic Peninsula is producing accelerated glacier mass loss and can be expected to have significant impacts on meltwater runoff regimes and proglacial fluvial activity.

Assessing the dynamic changes and the effect of buoyancy of lake-terminating Yanong Glacier in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau with UAV surveys

open access: yesJournal of Hydrology: Regional Studies
Study region: Yanong Glacier, a lake-terminating glacier, in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau. Study focus: Previous researches had indicated higher mass loss of lake-terminating glaciers than land-terminating glaciers over the past few decades. However,

Proglacial lake development and outburst flood hazard at Fjallsjökull glacier, southeast Iceland [PDF]

open access: yesNatural Hazards and Earth System Sciences
Glacier retreat is projected to continue with ongoing climate change, elevating the risk of mass-movement-triggered glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).
