Dementia is a progressive, irreversible illness and leading global cause of death defined by cognitive and subsequent functional decline. Current treatments have limited impact on mortality. In this chapter, we discuss the trajectory of dementia and its variability, markers associated with poorer prognosis (such as poor nutrition, pneumonia, comorbid ...

Prognosticating is central to primary palliative care in neurology. Many neurologic diseases carry a high burden of troubling symptoms, and many individuals consider health states due to neurologic disease worse than death. Many patients and families report high levels of need for information at all disease stages, including information about prognosis.

Abstract This chapter describes the prognostication of heart failure. Heart failure is a frequently progressive condition, although after commencing treatment patients usually reach a period of clinical ‘stability’, the duration of which varies between individuals.

The best predictive models of today can predict no more than 50% of the natural variability of the disease, despite the sophisticated mathematic analyses and the dozens of variables assessed. Clearly, a universe of still unknown prognostic factors remains to be discovered.

Prognostication in Schizophrenia
Psychopathology, 1986A long-term follow-up study with a mean duration of 20.2 years was performed in 5-year periods for 280 male schizophrenic patients discharged 1946-1950. To avoid a heterogeneous evaluation of the prognosis the author combined the outcome variables 'symptomatology', 'working ability' and 'social integration' as 'overall prognostic index'. Thus the final
