This paper discusses both the history and future of programming languages ( = higher level languages). Some of the difficulties in writing such a history are indicated. A key part of the paper is a tree showing the chronological development of languages and their interrelationships. Reasons for the proliferation of languages are given.

Programming Language for Automata
Journal of the ACM, 1967The techniques of automatic programming are useful for constructive proofs in automata theory. A formal definition of an elementary programming language for a stack automaton is given, and it is shown how this may be readily adapted to other classes of automata.
