Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy

Radiology, 1976
The radionuclide, radiographic and pathologic findings in a patient with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy were correlated. Radionuclide imaging demonstrated the largest two of the many lesions observed at pathology. On repeated studies, one of the lesions developed a "doughnut" sign due to central necrosis. Cerebral angiography disclosed only

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy and anti‐CD20 monoclonal antibodies: What do we know after 20 years of rituximab

Reviews in Medical Virology, 2019
In 1997, rituximab was the first monoclonal antibody clinically approved for the treatment of cancer. Ten years later, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), until that time a rare opportunistic infection mostly seen in AIDS patients, was ...

Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy

Archives of Ophthalmology, 1959
Astrom, Mancall, and Richardson1have recently directed attention to progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, a previously unrecognized neuropathological entity. Visual symptoms have been prominent in this disorder. As no cases have been reported in the ophthalmologic literature, the following instance of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy ...

Serum neurofilaments increase at progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy onset in natalizumab‐treated multiple sclerosis patients

Annals of Neurology, 2019
This study analyzed serum neurofilament light chains (NfL) in 2 European cohorts of 312 multiple sclerosis (MS) patients to investigate whether NfL are biomarkers of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) during natalizumab treatment.

Update on Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy

Current Neurology and Neuroscience Reports, 2012
Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a severe, often fatal, opportunistic viral infection of the central nervous system that is mainly seen in the context of AIDS and certain monoclonal immune-suppressive therapies. The causative agent, a polyoma virus, named JC virus infects only humans and there is no animal model for PML.

[Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy].

Der Nervenarzt, 2016
Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a disease of immunosuppressed patients caused by the JC polyomavirus (JCPyV). Due to the elevated risk in patients treated with natalizumab for multiple sclerosis (MS) and also treatment with other biologicals for different indications, the relevance of PML has increased in recent years.
