Laryngeal Dysfunction following Prolonged Intubation

Prolonged endotracheal intubation in the adult is becoming more popular with the advent of “soft” tubes and cuffs. The many deleterious effects of such long-term intubation on the laryngotrachea have been extensively discussed in the literature. However, only sporatic attention has been given to vocal cord paresis or paralysis.

Tracheostomy and prolonged intubation in the management of trauma

A retrospective review of 43 injured patients treated by prolonged endotracheal intubation for periods in excess of 2 days has been made and the results compared with 41 patients treated by tracheostomy. There was a higher mortality in intubated patients due to displacement and blockage of the tube. There was no evidence of serious damage to the larynx
