Grain velocities during ignition of gun propellant

Combustion and Flame, 1975
Abstract By means of a dual-flash X-ray technique, propellant grain velocities during ignition have been determined for the Navy 5-in./38 gun. At the completion of ignition, the velocity profile along the grain bed is sharply peaked with maximun velocity at the propellant free surface.

Modular Dissected Cryogenic Solid-Rocket Propellant Grains

Acta Astronautica, 2002
Abstract The paper deals with the concept of cryogenic solid-rocket propellant grains where the definition of solid propellants is not restricted to ambient temperature. Special cryogenic high-energy propellants, boundary layer combustion in solid propulsion and performance of cryogenic solid rockets are considered in turn.

Thermal Stresses in Spherical Case-Bonded Propellant Grains

Journal of Engineering for Industry, 1962
Expressions are derived for the bond stresses induced by a radially symmetric temperature distribution in spherical propellant grains bonded to spherical casings. Equations for the evaluation of radial and tangential stresses in the propellant and its casing have also been derived. Both solid and hollow propellant grains have been investigated.

Advanced technologies available for future solid propellant grains

Acta Astronautica, 2001
Abstract Significant advances have been made during the last decade in several fields of solid propulsion: the advances have enabled new savings in the motor development phase and recurring costs, because they help limit the number of prototypes and tests.

Solid-propellant grain-to-case bond-stress measurement

Experimental Mechanics, 1970
To satisfy the need for better definition of solid rocket-motor grain stress state, a through-the-case bond-stress gage* which provides for measurement of the radial stress induced at the propellant/liner/case interface during environmental-temperature variations has been developed.

Numerical Model for Propellant Grain Burning Surface Recession

1988
We build a two dimension and a three dimension mathematical model solving the recession of a burning surface. It corresponds to a non strictly hyperbolic system. A numerical scheme is proposed as well as some numerical experiments.

Heat conduction in star-perforated solid propellant grains

Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets, 1965
A new method for the analysis of transient-state heat conduction problems for solid propellant grains having a general star-shaped internal perforation was developed. A conformal transformation is used to map transverse cross sections of star-perforated propellant grains onto an annulus.

Combustion Diagnostics of Propellant with New Grain Geometries

1988
Abstract : High progressivity/density (HPD) propellants are under consideration at the Ballistic Research Laboratory (BRL) for a variety of enhanced ballistic applications. The HPD concept involves the tailoring of the mass generation rate to match the increasing chamber volume as the projectile moves down the gun tube.
