Large-area proportional counter

Canadian Journal of Physics, 1968
The properties of proportional counters have been studied using a model of size 2 × 2 m2 and 10 cm deep filled with PR gas at atmospheric pressure. These counters were found to be useful for constructing large-scale detectors with uniform sensitivity over large areas, such as 2 × 2 m2 or more.

Proportional counters using commercial equipment

Measurement Techniques, 1961
1. The use of the Moscow mains gas for the above counters and for the 4π counter [1] makes proportional flow counters more practical and easier to operate. 2. When the gas is burnt on ordinary laboratory burners its consumption varies between 4 and 25 liter/hr.

Mercury-Vapor Proportional Counters

Review of Scientific Instruments, 1958
A mercury-vapor filled proportional counter is described. Its behavior as a γ counter is investigated. The resolution is fair (7.5% energy spread at 60 kev); however, the various mercury x-ray fluorescence yields and absorption cross sections combine to make the output spectrum of the counter complex and difficult to interpret.

Proportional counter measurement system.

2022
This paper describes development of a proportional counter measurement system which is used to measure ionizing radiation. The system will allow easy acquisition of data from various detectors for further analysis and research of new processing algorithms. At first, hardware and software of the prototype system is described.

Large Area Beryllium Proportional Counters

IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science, 1970
Proportional counters have been developed for use in satellite X-ray astronomy experiments. The counters are all beryllium with 2.5 mil (63.5 micron) windows, using epoxy seals. They are shown to have excellent long-term stability and resistance to environmental stress, except for 100% humidity.

Distortion of Proportional Counter Spectra by Counter Poisons

Review of Scientific Instruments, 1962
Distorted spectra were obtained when the Mn K x-ray peak was observed in a proportional counter filled with CO2 and small pressures of the counter poison O2. The spectra can be explained with the assumption that the only effect of the poison is to capture electrons as they drift toward the anode.

Liquid-xenon proportional counter

Physics Today, 1972
Luis Alvarez and his collaborators at Berkeley have built a proportional counter filled with liquid xenon. When we recently discussed the new counter (while flying over the Bay Area in Alvarez's twin-engine Cessna), he told us that the new counter will be useful for cosmic-ray satellite experiments, for ground-based high-energy particle detection and ...
