Second order reflection from crystals used in soft X-ray spectroscopy

open access: yesNukleonika, 2015
In this note the ratio of the second to the first order reflection is determined for the KAP and PbSt crystals, for wavelengths corresponding to the Al K-line emission. The source of the radiation was a low-voltage stabilized X-ray tube.

Proportional Counters for Demonstration Experiments [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Physics, 1957
Proportional counters suitable for demonstration purposes are described, and some experiments to illustrate counter operation are discussed. The charge carried by the positive ions produced in the multiplication process, and the localization of the avalanche, is revealed in a special proportional counter whose cathode is covered by a layer of polythene.

Pulse shape analysis and identification of multipoint events in a large-volume proportional counter in an experimental search for 2K capture of 78Kr [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
A pulse shape analysis algorithm and a method for suppressing the noise component of signals from a large copper proportional counter in the experiment aimed at searching for 2K capture of Kr are described.

Proportional Counters and Microchannel Plates

open access: yes, 2022
Developed right at the beginning of the space age in the 1940s, the proportional counter was the first detector used in X-ray astronomy and stayed its workhorse for almost four decades. Although the principle of such a detector seems to be rather simple, over time it underwent considerable performance improvements and the lifetime under orbital ...

ADVANCES IN THE RXTE PROPORTIONAL COUNTER ARRAY CALIBRATION: NEARING THE STATISTICAL LIMIT [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
During its 16 years of service, the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) mission has provided an extensive archive of data, which will serve as a primary source of high cadence observations of variable X-ray sources for fast timing studies.

Calibrating and testing tissue equivalent proportional counters with 37Ar [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
A method for testing and calibrating tissue equivalent proportional counters with37Ar is described.37Ar is produced by exposure of argon in its normal isotope composition to thermal neutrons. It is shown that - up to volume ratios of 0.01 of argon to the

Design of a Rise Time Discrimination Circuit for X-ray Proportional Counter [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Astronomy and Space Sciences, 1995
It is possible to distinguish X-rat events from non X-ray events in proportional counters using the method of rise time discrimination (RTD). In order to subtract non X-ray background, we have developed a simple RTD circuit which will be applied to the ...
