Proportional Representation [PDF]

open access: possibleJournal of Theoretical Politics, 1998
Using a recent article by Monroe as a springboard, we extend and generalize his system of proportional representation (PR) by developing a general method for determining a set of winners from the ballots. Central to our analysis is the use of integer programming, which is a type of linear programming.

Proportional Representation in Metric Spaces and Low-Distortion Committee Selection

AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence, 2023
We introduce a novel definition for a small set R of k points being "representative" of a larger set in a metric space. Given a set V (e.g., documents or voters) to represent, and a set C of possible representatives, our criterion requires that for any ...

Competing Principals? Legislative Representation in List Proportional Representation Systems

American Journal of Political Science, 2020
We develop a new framework to study legislative representation in list proportional representation (PR) systems. Rejecting the classical closed-versus-open dichotomy, we instead conceptualize list PR as a continuum, reflecting different degrees of list ...

Proportional Representation in Practice: Quantifying Proportionality in Ordinal Elections

AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence
Proportional representation plays a crucial role in electoral systems. In ordinal elections, where voters rank candidates based on their preferences, the Single Transferable Vote (STV) is the most widely used proportional voting method. STV is considered

Boosting Sortition via Proportional Representation

Adaptive Agents and Multi-Agent Systems
Sortition is based on the idea of choosing randomly selected representatives for decision making. The main properties that make sortition particularly appealing are fairness --- where every citizen has an equal chance of being selected--- and ...

Full Proportional Justified Representation

Adaptive Agents and Multi-Agent Systems
In multiwinner approval voting, selecting a proportionally representative committee based on the voters' approval ballots is an essential task. The notion of justified representation (JR) demands that any large "cohesive" group of voters should be ...

Party-Determined Viability and Gender Bias in Open-List Proportional Representation Systems

Politics & Gender, 2019
Using individual-level data from three Lithuanian legislative elections (2008, 2012, 2016), this article investigates voter bias in an open-list proportional representation system in which parties rank candidates but voters are able to fully influence ...

Parties, Candidates, and Gendered Political Recruitment in Closed-List Proportional Representation Systems: The Case of Spain

Political research quarterly, 2018
Throughout the world, the number of women elected to legislatures has risen dramatically. Most of the quantitative research explaining party, district, or national differences has focused on the aggregate rather than the candidate level thereby ...
