Modeling of hydraulic fracture closure on proppants with proppant settling

Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering, 2018
Abstract The placement of proppants in a hydraulic fracture is governed by slurry flow, proppant transport and settlement. The proppant distribution can significantly affect the conductivity of the hydraulic fracture, and hence will impact the productivity of hydraulic fractured wells.

Erosion by Proppant: A Comparison of the Erosivity of Sand and Ceramic Proppants During Slurry Injection and Flowback of Proppant

SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 2004
Abstract During fracture stimulation treatments, particle-laden slurries may damage pumping equipment and have been shown to erode perforation tunnels. During subsequent flowback operations, minor to severe erosion of surface equipment may be observed if formation sand and/or proppants are produced.

Water As Proppant

SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 2011
Abstract The horizontal well with multiple transverse fractures, has proven to be a successful approach for production of gas from shale. As many as 80 fractures and nearly 10 million gallons of fracture fluid have been employed in a single well.

Factors Affecting Proppant Flowback with Resin Coated Proppants

SPE European Formation Damage Conference, 1995
ABSTRACT Resin coated proppants (RCP's) have been used to prevent proppant flowback for several years in the hydraulic fracturing of oil and gas wells. Proppant flowback problems, however, still exist with the commercially available RCP's and several operators report failures around the world under a variety of well conditions.

Proppant Shape Effect on Dynamic Conductivity of a Fracture Filled with Proppant

SPE Western Regional Meeting, 2018
Abstract Many studies showed that the particle shape has a significant effect on mechanical properties of sands. We are investigating the effect of proppant angularity on the dynamic conductivity of a fracture filled with proppant by simulating the irregularly shaped proppant. Our previous publication showed the important effect of grain

Proppant Flowback Control with High-Aspect Ratio Proppant and Advanced Modeling

SPE International Hydraulic Fracturing Technology Conference and Exhibition, 2023
Abstract Hydraulic fracturing is a common method of production enhancement for low- and mid-permeability reserves. Deep, hot gas reservoirs are usually fractured using ceramic proppant that is prone to flowback during fracture cleanup and production phases.

Enhancing Proppant Flowback Control Through Surface Treatment of Proppant

International Petroleum Technology Conference, 2016
Abstract Post stimulation proppant flow back has long been an issue of the hydraulic fracturing process. The most common means of remedying proppant flowback has been to treat proppants with a resin coating. However, the most daunting factor in using resin-coated proppants is the resulting high price, which can be in excess of four times

Fiber/Proppant Mixtures Control Proppant Flowback in South Texas

Proceedings of SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 1995
Abstract Backproduction of proppant from hydraulic fractures (proppant flowback) is a continuing operational problem in the oil and gas industry. Up to 20% of the proppant can be flowed back after the treatment.1 Curable resin-coated proppants are used to control proppant production, but are known to chemically interact with fracturing ...

Proppant Transport

All Days, 1977
Novotny, E.J., Member of SPE-AIME, Exxon Production Research Co. Abstract A method is presented for predicting:the transport of proppant in a vertical fracture during a hydraulic fracturing treatment, the settling of the proppant during closure of the fracture following the treatment, andfrom the final

The Conductivity of Proppant and Impacts of Proppant Flowback on Fracture Conductivity in Different Conditions

56th U.S. Rock Mechanics/Geomechanics Symposium, 2022
ABSTRACT: Hydraulic fracturing can increase the fracture conductivity by providing high-conductivity channels for hydrocarbon flow. Proppants flow back from the propped fracture during the early stage of production in the hydraulically fractured tight reservoirs, during which the fracture conductivity decreased due ...
