The Quest for Improved Proppant Placement: Investigation of the Effects of Proppant Slurry Component Properties on Transport

Proceedings of SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 2005
Abstract Beyond the initial fracture propagation, the primary function of fracturing fluids is to provide the means and media for the transport and placement of a conductive proppant pack in the created fracture such that resident hydrocarbons may be more easily produced. That is after all, the objective of hydraulic fracture stimulation.

Proppant Transport

All Days, 1977
Novotny, E.J., Member of SPE-AIME, Exxon Production Research Co. Abstract A method is presented for predicting:the transport of proppant in a vertical fracture during a hydraulic fracturing treatment, the settling of the proppant during closure of the fracture following the treatment, andfrom the final

Propagation, proppant transport and the evolution of transport properties of hydraulic fractures

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2018
Hydraulic fracturing is a widely used method for well stimulation to enhance hydrocarbon recovery. Permeability, or fluid conductivity, of the hydraulic fracture is a key parameter to determine the fluid production rate, and is principally conditioned by fracture geometry and the distribution of the encased proppant.

Proppant Transport in Complex Fracture Networks

SPE Hydraulic Fracturing Technology Conference and Exhibition, 2018
Abstract During hydraulic fracturing, natural fractures and bedding planes can intersect with growing hydraulic fractures and form complex fracture networks. This can result in the flow of fluid and proppant in convoluted fracture pathways with highly variable fracture width and height.

Measurement of Proppant Transport of Frac Fluids

SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 2005
Abstract The object of hydraulic fracturing is to produce a propped fracture extending from the wellbore. Extensive time and effort are expended in measuring rheological properties of crosslinked fluids (without proppant) under simulated downhole temperature and shear-history conditions.

Self-regulating solutions for proppant transport

Chemical Engineering Science, 2016
Fluids displaying flow induced viscoelasticity are tested for proppant placement and flow back. The viscosity is self-regulating and obviates the need for viscosifiers and breakers. The flow induced viscoelasticity degrades at higher flow rates enabling good injectivity.

Transport of Proppant in Hydraulic Fractures

Proceedings of SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 2006
Abstract Prediction of proppant transport is important in both treatment design and post-treatment analysis. Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in proppant transport as evidenced by the number of papers presented at SPE meetings. There are a number of factors that have been overlooked in these papers that we believe are of

Enhanced 2D Proppant Transport Simulation: The Key To Understanding Proppant Flowback and Post-Frac Productivity

Proceedings of SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 1997
It has been assumed that along with fluid viscosity and pump rate, gravity dominates final proppant placement in hydraulic fractures. Results here, based on detailed multiphase-flow modeling, show that other factors such as slurry rheology (effect of adding proppant on slurry viscosity), fluid loss and layered fluid loss, and vertical fracture-width ...

Inverted Convective Proppant Transport for Effective Conformance Fracturing

SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 2007
Abstract In mature fields, a continuous challenge for operators is to maximize hydrocarbon recovery while minimizing associated water production. Water production causes several problems including scaling, fines migration or sand-face failure, tubular corrosion and increased hydrostatic loadings. Thus, although water production is almost

Modeling of Proppant Transport and Placement in Hydraulic Fractures

57th U.S. Rock Mechanics/Geomechanics Symposium, 2023
ABSTRACT Proppants are injected to keep the fractures open during hydraulic fracturing. It is of great importance to identify where the injected proppants go. However, proppant placement in the fractures has remained a challenging question given that proppant placement is a complicated phenomenon coupling several ...
