Numerical simulation of fluid flow, proppant transport and fracture propagation in hydraulic fractures for unconventional reservoirs. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The distribution of proppant injected in hydraulic fractures significantly affects fracture-conductivity and well-performance. The proppant transport and suspension in thin fracturing fluid used in unconventional reservoirs are considerably different ...

Three-dimensional multi-level fracture propping technique for full-domain propped fracturing: A case study of shale oil and gas reservoir stimulation

open access: yesPetroleum Exploration and Development
Effective propping of multi-stage fractures is challenging in shale oil and gas reservoirs stimulated by full-domain propped fracturing. This paper discusses the three-dimensional multi-level fracture propping technique, a component of the full-domain ...

Thermo‐Hydrodynamic Processes of Microparticles in Fractures: A CFD–DEM Approach

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, Volume 50, Issue 10, Page 4230-4246, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Controlling fracture permeability plays a critical role in subsurface energy applications, particularly in geothermal energy production and enhanced carbon sequestration, where regulating fluid flow is essential. The use of microcapsules has become a promising solution to enhance fracture permeability by providing a controlled sealing ...

Numerical simulation study on the ultimate injection concentration and injection strategy of a proppant in hydraulic fracturing

open access: yesFrontiers in Energy Research
The injection volume and the distribution of a proppant inside a fracture have a direct impact on the stimulation effect of fracturing. In this study, a new proppant transport model was established based on the Euler method.

Numerical Investigation on Proppant–Water Mixture Transport in Slot under High Reynolds Number Conditions

open access: yesEnergies, 2020
Water hydraulic fracturing involves pumping low viscosity fluid and proppant mixture into the artificial fracture under a high pumping rate. In that high Reynolds number conditions (HRNCs, Re > 2000), the turbulence effect is one of the key factors ...

Analysis and Modeling of Proppant Transport in Inclined Hydraulic Fractures

open access: yes, 2018
The understanding of proppant transport in fractures plays a critical role in estimating propped fracture dimensions and performance. Modeling of such processes is challenging because of the complex interactions between fluid, proppant particles and ...

Quantitative and visual analysis of proppant transport in rough fractures

open access: yesJournal of Natural Gas Science and Engineering, 2016
Abstract The consensus reached in the literature is that the roughness of fractures plays a crucial role on proppant transport affecting the aperture sustainability and conductivity of hydraulic fractures. To clarify this, an experimental scheme and analysis are presented in this paper. Propping agents were introduced into seven different transparent

The price responsiveness of shale producers: Evidence from micro data

open access: yesQuantitative Economics, Volume 17, Issue 2, Page 394-430, May 2026.
We show that U.S. shale oil producers exhibit a high degree of short‐run price responsiveness, primarily through the timing of well completions and refracturing. Using a novel monthly well‐level panel covering over 120,000 shale wells across ten states from 2005 to 2019, we document significant supply adjustments to price signals.
