Anatomically plausible illusory posture affects mental rotation of body parts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
During mental rotation (MR) of body parts, people internally simulate the movement of their corresponding body segments. These sensory-motor mechanisms render MR sensitive to proprioceptive information (e.g., posture).

Evidence that subclinical somatoform dissociation is not characterised by heightened awareness of proprioceptive signals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Introduction: It has been suggested that abnormal perceptual processing and somatosensory amplification may be contributory factors to somatoform symptom reporting.

Modeling and Characterization of a Self‐Sensing Soft Hydraulic Muscle

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This article presents the self‐sensing soft hydraulic muscle (SSHM), a novel soft actuator capable of simultaneously sensing force and length without external sensors. A comprehensive model accurately predicts SSHM behavior, validated experimentally with minimal errors. Using propylene glycol enhances durability and reduces hysteresis.

Multisensory integration induces body ownership of a handtool, but not any handtool [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Bodily boundaries are computed by integrating multisensory bodily signals and can be experimentally manipulated using bodily illusions. Research on tool use demonstrates that tools alter body representations motorically to account for changes in a user's

Bio‐to‐Robot Transfer of Fish Sensorimotor Dynamics via Interpretable Model

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates how a biologically interpretable model trained on real‐fish muscle activity can accurately predict the motion of a robotic fish. By linking real‐fish sensorimotor dynamics with robotic fish, the work offers a transparent, data‐efficient framework for transferring biological intelligence to bioinspired robotic systems.

I’m sensing in the rain: spatial incongruity in visual-tactile mid-air stimulation can elicit ownership in VR users [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Major virtual reality (VR) companies are trying to enhance the sense of immersion in virtual environments by implementing haptic feedback in their systems (e.g., Oculus Touch).

Slip‐Adaptive Neural Control of Gecko‐Inspired Adhesive Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This study introduces a neural adhesion controller to improve the stability of gecko‐inspired climbing robots. By integrating an echo state network and a multilayer perceptron, the system utilizes joint torque feedback to accurately estimate adhesion in both normal and shear directions and predict slips. This enables effective recovery from slip events,

Tool Embodiment: The Tool’s Output Must Match the User’s Input

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2019
The embodiment of tools and rubber hands is believed to involve the modification of two separate body representations: the body schema and the body image, respectively. It is thought that tools extend the capabilities of the body’s action schema, whereas

Can visual stimulus induce proprioceptive drift in the upper arm using virtual reality? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Sustained isometric contractions (SIC), such as holding an arm stationary in a space, are often used in upper limb rehabilitation exercises, particularly where it is important to protect the joints and tendons or to reduce patient fatigue. However, visual cues within a virtual environment may have an unanticipated effect on the ability to maintain SIC.
