Propulsive Performances of Pulsed Detonations

Combustion Science and Technology, 1999
The propulsive potential of a reactive mixture that uses detonation as a combustion process is studied. An experimental set up is built up to determine the thrust and the impulse developed in single and multi-operating cycles by the detonation products of a reactive mixture contained in a cylindrical combustion chamber (CC).

Effect of trailing-edge shape on the self-propulsive performance of heaving flexible plates

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2020
The effect of trailing-edge shape on the self-propulsive performance of three-dimensional flexible plates is studied numerically. In our study, the trailing edges of the plates are symmetric chevron shapes, and the trailing-edge angle $\unicode[STIX ...

Propulsion and aerodynamic performance evaluation of jet-wing distributed propulsion

Aerospace Science and Technology, 2010
Distributed propulsion is the idea of redistributing the thrust across the drag producing elements of a vehicle. Our configuration has a modest number of engines with part of the exhaust flow vented from thick trailing edges of the wings to cancel the local profile drag and the rest of the exhaust flow providing thrust to cancel the induced drag and ...

Performance of synchronized fins in biomimetic propulsion

Bioinspiration & Biomimetics, 2015
By using a two-dimensional model of ray fins, we numerically investigate the thrust generation by closely-coupled fins with an immersed boundary approach. The concentration is on the performance enhancement through fin-fin interactions and the underlying vortex control mechanisms in three representative systems, a two-fin tandem configuration, a two ...

Flow characteristics and propulsive performance of oblique detonation waves induced by a transverse jet

The Physics of Fluids
The initiation of oblique detonation waves (ODWs) is a key component of the successful application of oblique detonation wave engines (ODWEs). This paper numerically investigates the initiation of ODWs under the active control of a transverse jet by ...

Numerical investigation on the propulsive performance and acoustic characteristics of two flapping foils in tandem

The Physics of Fluids
A numerical investigation is conducted on the propulsive performance and acoustic characteristics of two flapping foils in tandem at Re = 200 in uniform flow using the lattice Boltzmann method combined with the immersed boundary method.

Titan III propulsion system performance evaluation.

Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets, 1968
An acceleration- based procedure for accurate determination of propulsion system performance from flight daja is described in this paper. The procedure emplpys iteration techniques to achieve a weighted least-squares ("best") fit to all of the applicable flight data.

Effect of chordwise deformation on propulsive performance of flapping wings in forward flight

Aeronautical Journal, 2020
Lack of flexibility limits the performance enhancement of man-made flapping wing Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs). Active chordwise deformation (bending) is introduced into the flapping wing model at low Reynolds number of Re = 200 in the present study.

Influencing Factors on Propulsive Performances of Water Droplets for Laser Propulsion

Journal of Propulsion and Power, 2010
A transversely excited at atmospheric pressure CO 2 laser operated at 10.6 μm and 5 μs pulse width was employed to ablate atomized water droplets for laser propulsion. The momentum was derived from the force sensor data. Experimental results indicated that coupling coefficient C m , specific impulse I sp , and internal efficiency η were increased ...

Comparison of self-propulsion performance between vessels with single-screw propulsion and hybrid contra-rotating podded propulsion

Ocean Engineering, 2021
Abstract The present work compares the self-propulsion performance between vessels with single-screw propulsion and hybrid contra-rotating podded propulsion. The viscous flow fields of 4000 TEU container vessels with single-screw, single-rudder propulsion and hybrid contra-rotating propeller (CRP) podded propulsion systems were solved numerically by ...
