Design of a total wrist prosthesis
Annals of Biomedical Engineering, 1984Diseased wrist joints, in such cases as rheumatoid arthritis, are often required to be replaced by a prosthesis to relieve pain and to recover the wrist function. In designing this replacement, it is essential to understand the behavior of a normal wrist joint in its kinematic and kinetic aspects.

Topological optimization in hip prosthesis design
Biomechanics and Modeling in Mechanobiology, 2009With particular interest on total hip arthroplasty (THA), optimization of orthopedic prostheses is employed in this work to minimize the probability of implant failure or maximize prosthesis reliability. This goal is often identified with the reduction of stress concentrations at the interface between bone and these devices.

Biomechanical Design of the Total Ankle Prosthesis
Engineering in Medicine, 1983The load bearing joints of the human body and particularly the ankle are often seriously damaged because of different pathological events. During the last 10 years a lot of total ankle prostheses have been studied and implanted, in consequence of the inadequate results obtained by arthrodesis (i.e. the fusion of the joint).

An alternative design of extension prosthesis
Prosthetics & Orthotics International, 1987Some patients with a congenitally shortened lower limb can be fitted with a total contact socket of one piece construction, dispensing with the need for removable panels or split socket construction. This gives advantages in weight, strength and cosmesis. The technique is described and compared with those conventionally used.

Design and characterization of a powered elbow prosthesis
2015 37th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC), 2015This paper describes the design of a powered elbow prosthesis, which incorporates a belt and cable drive transmission with a brushless DC motor to achieve an output torque of approximately 18.4 Nm, a backdrive torque of 1.5 Nm, and a speed of up to 360 deg/s while remaining within the anthropomorphic envelope with regard to mass and size.

Design and fabrication of an experimental cochlear prosthesis
Medical & Biological Engineering & Computing, 1983The technical and safety requirements for intracochlear electrical stimulation to restore hearing in the profoundly deaf are reviewed. A system has been implanted in human subjects which comprises a 16-contact flexible electrode array, radio receiver/stimulator and surgical disconnect which permits changing from percutaneous cable to transcutaneous ...
