A new remarkable Early Cretaceous nelumbonaceous fossil bridges the gap between herbaceous aquatic and woody protealeans [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
Dating back to the late Early Cretaceous, the macrofossil record of the iconic lotus family (Nelumbonaceae) is one of the oldest of flowering plants and suggests that their unmistakable leaves and nutlets embedded in large pitted receptacular fruits ...

Spermatophyta Molecular Clock: Time Drift and Recent Acceleration. [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Environ Interact
Exponential increase in the base substitution rate in recent geologic time. ABSTRACT Angiospermae radiation is widely recognized as a mid‐Cretaceous event, but the adaptive radiation of Asarum and Viola as spring ephemerals also occurred during the Quaternary. To better understand the evolution of Angiospermae through geological time, a robust and well‐

Comparative Analysis of Diversification Rates in Clonal and Non-Clonal Flowering Plants. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Lett
Using data from 16,465 angiosperm species across 2,997 genera, we classified genera as clonal, mixed, or non‐clonal and estimated diversification using genus‐level phylogeny with DR, MoM, and BAMM. Clonal genera consistently showed lower diversification rates than mixed and non‐clonal genera across all methods.

Elucidation of the (R)-enantiospecific benzylisoquinoline alkaloid biosynthetic pathways in sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
Benzylisoquinoline alkaloids (BIAs) are a structurally diverse group of plant specialized metabolites found mainly in members of the order Ranunculales, including opium poppy (Papaver somniferum), for which BIA biosynthetic pathways leading to the ...

Characterize the Complete Mitogenome of <i>Semiaquilegia guangxiensis</i> and Assess the Efficiency of the Mitochondrial Genes in Ranunculales Phylogeny. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
In this study, we assembled and annotated the whole mitogenome of S. guangxiensis and explored its evolution, including analyzing repeat sequences, codon usage, intergenomic transfer, and RNA editing sites. Moreover, we assessed and prioritized the usefulness of the mitochondrial genes in phylogenetics according to the combination of multiple metrics ...

Herbivory Dominates the Spring Diet of American Black Bears (<i>Ursus americanus</i>) in a Wood Bison (<i>Bison bison athabascae</i>) Neonatal Range, Suggesting Minimal Bison Consumption. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
In this study, we used scat analysis and DNA metabarcoding to analyze the spring diet of black bears in the neonatal range of a small, threatened wood bison herd in northeast Alberta to assess predation risk of neonate bison. Our results suggest that consumption rates of bison are low and that predation risk to neonate wood bison, during the RLBH's ...
