Role of protected areas in mitigating range loss and local extinctions of terrestrial mammals. [PDF]

open access: yesConserv Biol
Abstract Protected areas (PAs) are a major tool in biodiversity conservation, but the extent to which they mitigate species declines is often unclear. We evaluated the effectiveness of PAs in mitigating range contraction and local extinction for 483 terrestrial mammal species.

Informing spatial conservation prioritization with species' traits. [PDF]

open access: yesConserv Biol
Abstract New Guinea, the most botanically diverse island on the planet, is the location for one of the boldest conservation initiatives. The Manokwari Declaration aims to achieve 70% conservation designation for the Bird's Head Peninsula. This is 40% higher than the 2022 Global Biodiversity Framework target.

Changes in community composition and functional diversity of European bats under climate change. [PDF]

open access: yesConserv Biol
Abstract Climate change is predicted to drive geographical range shifts that will result in changes in species diversity and functional composition and have potential repercussions for ecosystem functioning. However, the effect of these changes on species composition and functional diversity (FD) remains unclear, especially for mammals, specifically ...

Effects of large mammal exclusion on seedling communities depend on plant species traits and landscape protection in human‐modified Costa Rican forests

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 60, Issue 12, Page 2561-2572, December 2023., 2023
Insight into the interactions between LTH‐mammals and seedling communities in forest regeneration can be instrumental in planning effective restoration efforts. We highlight the importance of landscape protection in seedling survival and the role of LTH‐mammals in promoting seedling diversity in mature forests but also in secondary successional forests.

Prioritizing global tall forests toward the 30 × 30 goals

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 37, Issue 6, December 2023., 2023
Abstract The Global Deal for Nature sets an ambitious goal to protect 30% of Earth's land and ocean by 2030. The 30 × 30 initiative is a way to allocate conservation resources and extend protection to conserve vulnerable and underprotected ecosystems while reducing carbon emissions to combat climate change.

Sensitivity of tropical montane birds to anthropogenic disturbance and management strategies for their conservation in agricultural landscapes

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 37, Issue 6, December 2023., 2023
Abstract Tropical montane bird communities are hypothesized to be highly sensitive to anthropogenic disturbance because species are adapted to a narrow range of environmental conditions and display high rates of endemism. We assessed avian sensitivity at regional and continental scales for a global epicenter of montane bird biodiversity, the tropical ...

Contribution of cultural heritage values to steppe conservation on ancient burial mounds of Eurasia

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 37, Issue 6, December 2023., 2023
Abstract Civilizations, including ancient ones, have shaped global ecosystems in many ways through coevolution of landscapes and humans. However, the cultural legacies of ancient and lost civilizations are rarely considered in the conservation of the Eurasian steppe biome.
