What are protoclusters? – Defining high-redshift galaxy clusters and protoclusters [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2015
We explore the structures of protoclusters and their relationship with high-redshift clusters using the Millennium Simulation combined with a semi-analytic model. We find that protoclusters are very extended, with 90 per cent of their mass spread across

Star formation and chemical enrichment in protoclusters

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2023
ABSTRACT We examine star formation and chemical enrichment in protoclusters (PCs) using cosmological zoom-in hydrodynamic simulations. We find that the total star formation rate (SFR) in all PC ($\gt 10^{14.4}\, h^{-1}$ M⊙) reaches $\gt 10^4\, \mathrm{M}_\odot \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$ at z = 3, equivalent to the observed PCs.

A population of ultraviolet-dim protoclusters detected in absorption

open access: yesNature, 2022
Galaxy protoclusters, which will eventually grow into the massive clusters we see in the local universe, are usually traced by locating overdensities of galaxies.

Discovery of Protoclusters at z ∼ 3.7 and 4.9: Embedded in Primordial Superclusters [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 2020
We have carried out follow-up spectroscopy on three overdense regions of g- and r-dropout galaxies in the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey Deep Fields, finding two new protoclusters at z = 4.898 and 3.721 and a possible protocluster at z = 3 ...
