The Cancer Journal, 2014
Sarcomas are a heterogeneous group of tumors that can occur in a wide array of anatomic sites and age ranges with varying histologies. Proton beam therapy, as compared with advanced x-ray radiation therapy techniques, can substantially lower dose to nontarget tissues.

Radiology, 1974
Physical, technical, radiological, and clinical status of proton therapy is reviewed. Protons produce effects similar to those of x rays, but dose distribution and range make protons more flexible and useful therapeutically. The ability to confine the major fraction of proton absorbed dose to a designated volume allows the decrease of dose to normal ...

Investigation of Proton–Boron Capture Therapy vs. proton therapy
Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 2020Abstract This study aims to compare proton therapy and Proton Boron Capture Therapy (PBCT) through Monte Carlo simulation. A proton beam passing through the Snyder head phantom was simulated with and without boron in a tumor region at the center of the phantom.

Exploration and application of phenomenological RBE models for proton therapy
Physics in Medicine and Biology, 2018The relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of protons varies with multiple physical and biological factors. Phenomenological RBE models have been developed to include such factors in the estimation of a variable RBE, in contrast to the clinically ...

Your article about the new Rinecker Proton Therapy Center near Munich (May p7) overlooks the long history of using protons to treat cancer in Europe. Although the Rinecker centre will be the first purpose-built facility for high-energy proton therapy on a hospital site in Europe, proton therapy has been active in Europe at Uppsala University in Sweden ...

The clinical advantage for proton radiotherapy over photon approaches is the marked reduction in integral dose to the patient, due to the absence of exit dose beyond the proton Bragg peak. The integral dose with protons is approximately 60% lower than that with any external beam photon technique.

Proton-Beam Therapy in Acromegaly
New England Journal of Medicine, 1968Abstract Bragg-peak proton hypophysectomy was used in 22 acromegalic patients. Of 14 followed for two to 36 months, size of hands, feet or face decreased in nine. Variable improvement took place in headache, fatigability, heat intolerance, joint pain, sexual function, weight, skin, tachycardia, hypertension, visual fields, glucose tolerance, thyroid ...
