Multiple losses of photosynthesis and convergent reductive genome evolution in the colourless green algae Prototheca [PDF]

open access: gold, 2018
Autotrophic eukaryotes have evolved by the endosymbiotic uptake of photosynthetic organisms. Interestingly, many algae and plants have secondarily lost the photosynthetic activity despite its great advantages.

High-Quality Genome Assemblies of Two Prototheca wickerhamii Strains [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Data
Prototheca wickerhamii is a non-photosynthetic microalgal species that has been implicated in opportunistic human infections. Understanding its genomic features is crucial for both medical applications and symbiosis research.

Phenotypic and molecular characterization of Prototheca wickerhamii from a Brazilian case of human systemic protothecosis. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases
The genus Prototheca (alga) comprises a unique group of achlorophyllic saprotrophic and mammalian pathogen species. Despite its rare occurrence in humans and animals, protothecosis is considered an emerging clinical entity with relevance in ...

Extended Survival in a Dog With Disseminated Protothecosis. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Vet Intern Med
ABSTRACT A 5‐year‐old Basenji Mix achieved extended survival with treatment for disseminated protothecosis. The dog originally presented with iridal hyperemia and ocular ultrasonographic examination revealed a mass effect. Histopathology revealed ocular protothecosis and staging confirmed disseminated protothecosis.

Integration of transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics data for the detection of the human pathogenic Prototheca wickerhamii from a One Health perspective

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2023
Prototheca species are the only microalgae known to cause opportunistic infections in vertebrates and humans. Most cases of protothecosis in humans are caused by Prototheca wickerhamii, but knowledge of the pathogenicity and biology of Prototheca is ...

Ribosomal internal transcribed spacer of Prototheca wickerhamii has characteristic structure useful for identification and genotyping. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Prototheca species are achlorophyllous algae ubiquitous in nature and known to cause localized and systemic infection both in humans and animals. Although identification of the Prototheca species in clinical specimens is a challenge, there are an ...
