The prototypicality of gender

Women's Studies International Forum, 1996
Abstract Femininity and masculinity, as abstract, nonbiological concepts, are very difficult to define. Culturally and socially induced, they are subject to drastic change over time. This article presents prototypical notions of feminine and masculine, as they appeared from a categorisation test performed by Dutch students.

Prototypes and Prototype Rules

2019
Prototype effects “permeate the very structure of language itself.” This is correct, but the notion of prototype is too often understood as a vaguely defined continuum, made up of “central” and “marginal” members, without criteria allowing the precise identification of the so-called degrees of prototypicality.

Prototyping (in) healthcare

Proceedings of the 11th Biennial Participatory Design Conference, 2010
As Participatory Design (PD) moves into healthcare distinct practical issues emerge. We argue that PD researchers need to respond to these new challenges by establishing an ongoing dialogue on the practicalities of e.g. prototyping in healthcare. With this workshop we intend to start such reflections by focusing on practical issues of prototyping, such

A Primer on Prototyping

2015
Standard mechanical components, such as adapters or mounts, are ubiquitous in research laboratories, C. elegans labs included. Recently, in-house prototyping and fabricating both standard and custom mechanical parts has become simple and cost effective.

Prototypes as performative

Proceedings of the 4th decennial conference on Critical computing: between sense and sensibility, 2005
This paper considers performative aspects of prototyping in design. Drawing on STS and a casestudy involving a prototypical disease management technology, it exemplify and discuss prototyping as a performative process that produces specific subjectivities and bodies.
