Protein import into mitochondria relies on TIM complexes and the membrane potential. Trypanosoma brucei has a unique TIM complex, and the role of one subunit, TbTim20, has remained unclear. Here, we show that TbTim20 is essential in cells lacking mitochondrial DNA. The importance of TbTim20 increases as the membrane potential decreases.

Determination of magnetic motor evoked potential latency time cutoff values for detection of spinal cord dysfunction in horses [PDF]
Background: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and recording of magnetic motor evoked potentials (MMEP) can detect neurological dysfunction in horses but cutoff values based on confirmed spinal cord dysfunction are lacking.

The structural, functional, and therapeutic potential of metacaspases in fungi and protozoa
Metacaspases are Ca2+‐dependent cysteine proteases whose structural characteristics, particularly calcium binding and autocatalytic processing, govern their activation and biological functions. These enzymes differ among microorganisms and regulate their cell cycles, making them excellent targets for drug development.

S100B inhibitor pentamidine attenuates reactive gliosis and reduces neuronal loss in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease [PDF]
Among the different signaling molecules released during reactive gliosis occurring in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the astrocytederived S100B protein plays a key role in neuroinflammation, one of the hallmarks of the disease.
